Newark School of Architecture and Interior Design, Newark Public Schools, Newark, NJ

The Newark School of Architecture and Interior Design, a new high school offering specialized education in Architecture, Interior Design, and High Skilled Trades including Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC, will occupy the former St. James Hospital in Newark’s Ironbound.  A new 40,000 SF addition over parking will accommodate large group spaces.  The design of the school and use of materials reflect the rich tradition of Newark, nicknamed “Brick City,” known for its brick and steel structures and supportive community trades professionals.

After sitting derelict for over thirteen years, the 60-year-old former St. James Hospital is being given new life.  The Newark Board of Education, responsible for the largest and one of the oldest school districts in New Jersey, is continuing its efforts to meet and exceed the needs of their large and diverse student population by creating the new magnet school in the East Ward.  Enrollment in the school is projected to be 960 students by 2025.

One of many challenges in the design was the Adaptive Reuse of the hospital, a 127,000 SF five-story reinforced concrete structure with over 200 hospital rooms into design studios, classrooms, support spaces and shop classes for high skilled trades.  Particular attention was paid to incorporating architectural features including exposed structure where appropriate and high-end finishes in public spaces to inspire students and visitors.  Designing a specialized school in a limited urban footprint also proved to be a challenge.

The design of the school allows for views of Lower Manhattan and Downtown Newark, a two-story full scale building system mock-up space and state-of-the-art science labs, gymnasium, auditorium, media center, a secured landscaped courtyard and outdoor dining area.  A school bus drop-off underneath the new addition will accommodate emergency vehicles, visiting sports teams and a handicap accessible entry to the main lobby.
