USPS Rockefeller Center Station, New York, NY

United States Postal Service

Rockefeller Center is, without question, one of New York City’s most cherished commercial and cultural centers. The fourteen original Art Deco landmark buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The primary buildings in the complex were constructed between 1931 and 1939.

Tishman Speyer purchased the complex in 2000 and has been successfully managing the property ever since.

The Postal Service previously occupied a space on the concourse (lower) level of the property, but in 2018 found an opportunity to move their facility to a primary location on West 51st Street, just around the corner from the world famous Rockefeller Center Plaza and “The Rink” (and of course, the holiday tree!)

This project for the Postal Service included the design of a new high-ceilinged, 9-teller customer lobby and associated support spaces. These sidewalk-level spaces are approximately 7,400 sq. ft. in area. The four 16-foot-tall storefront windows on the north side of the USPS space provide a full view of the expansive customer lobby from West 51st. The lobby houses several automatic teller machines and over 1,400 post office boxes.

The lobby floor level is connected to a critical USPS basement space (approximately 2100 sq. ft. in area) with a new service elevator. The staging area on this level is connected to Rockefeller Center’s extensive underground truck loading area. Construction on the initial USPS project was completed in 2022.
